The workshop was with Hansje Van Halem, working as a freelance type designer. When on ethinks of type, one always thnks of something you could use on your computer and type paragraphs with and so on. But… here is the twist. hansje.net

THE ASSIGNMENT

Budget given to us was: a BIC pen which writes 3 kms. So, how could we cleverly use this ink and design:

The interesting point was to keep the various parameters of readability and legibility in mind. And what would we want the smallest size of out type to be, how do we take care of the thickness and thinness of the stroke, etc.

THE SOLUTION

One of the parameters for designing was HOW? will we calculate the budget we spend?

I tried various methods. I tried using a grid that works on the number of centimeters i spend on making a grid for my type (which will be a visible part of my type design). One grid was square 5cm x 5cm with a parabola inside. And those parabola connections within the square giving shape to the type, so the basic grid is same for each and every letter.

Another idea was to use a simple grid but using diagnol lines in combination of opposite orientation. The number and thickness and thinness of lines could control amount of ink spent in terms of centimeters. The height was 7 units by 5 units (in this case 7cm x 5 cm, sometimes 7cm x 4.5/4 cm). In cases Like I or J, 2.5cm was the smallest width.

I enjoyed making this style as it played a lot with texture, shadow, etc just by using different line weight, which also meant using more budget per letter. Below, I tried getting consistency with the corners of the letters.

I chose the final concept using a spiral, which roughtly measured to use 50cm by making one condensed spiral of 25 rounds. Which meant

3km = 300000 cms

i spiral = 50 cms

300000/50 = 6000 spirals avaliable

6000/26(alphabets) = 230 spirals per alphabet.

B in the making

and so on…

Finally I chose this because of teh time constraint. I chose to fill the alphabets dark to lighter spirals inwards, so that it consumes the budget of 230 spirals per letter. The darker outlines reinforce the letter shape and increase legibility.

\

what kind!

If someone asks you what kind of ………………(your profession) you would like to be (in my case, a designer), first one gets confused by the huge ocean of possibilities lying ahead of us… but somewhere within maybe you know the answer.

I dont know what exact kind of designer I would like to be, but I knew that India is a land of opportunities. Some say land of problems, some say land of spirituality and I say opportunities. Infact my dad does. He always mentions a problem is a door opening to a newer opportunities, to meet new people and to create new things. The same way, i see India as a land of opportunities. Especially in the public sector.

Speaking of the public sector and design… things can go slow with the multiple bosses and decision makers and the hierarchy. Also, if one works for the NGO’s, you would get paid just enough (read “less money”). So, I as a designer would like work in these sectors but to strike a balance do different kind of work which pay well.

Assignment: what kind of designer would you like to be?

Time: 2hours

time used on making this chart: 15 mins.

Understanding Tools

The first assignment was to design a hand drawn diagram of the tools we use. “their interrelationship and their relationship to their working method.” The size of the diagram was A1. The fun element was that we had no computer/digital help could be used.

As a designer I feel, the most important tools are those, which one cant see or measure quantitatively. Starting with my ideas… the tool for which is my Brain. As a designer, the most important for is the ideas/concepts. This was because everyone has a brain. So what sets apart the designers from others? the answer was the way we use it. Having or owning something and the way of using it are two different things. So then, is it a skill? Because one can acquire a skill by repeated use of a tool. I concluded that for designers, our brain is a generative tool. For me the most important one.

Coming to other “Intangible tools”, we have our 5 senses. Eyes = vision, Nose = smell, Ear = sound, Mouth = taste, Skin = touch. For me all these are my intangible tools.

Another domain is that of Tangible tools. Which includes everything that I use as an extension of my body. Pen, paper, camera, computer, cutter, etc. I also realized that these tools shape my design products/deliverables. Whereas the intangible tools show me the direction of research/visualization/concepts through my design process.

The tangible tools were used throughout the design process and we designers choose selectively from a wide collection of our tools to form the desired outcome. These tools are very calculative and usually also hep us do things precisely, faster and sometimes digitally. So, I chose the innermost scattered layer showing the tangible tools, middle layer showing the design process (in green) and the outermost yellow layer forming the tangible tools which are used throught the process.

A small sketch for the diagram

The final one

The mentors were surpised to see a lot of process involved rather than a mere diagram representing tools. They also mentioned that it was interesting to see some different point of views from different students.

"The more you know, the more you realize you know nothing."

“The more you know, the more you realize you know nothing.”

- Socrates
